Bonnie Schneider

A large part of this is since I graduated from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, as well as being an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) as well as having observed the liberal arts education in person (Brown University) It is my belief that it is important to integrate education and the study of art with other subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist who has a MA in 1967 as well as the Ph.D. earned from UCLA. The program in ethnomusicology that I joined in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) fits well in a department of music that is part of a College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple areas of interest is something that I truly love. It's an absolute pleasure teaching graduate as well as undergraduate students. I'm a published writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing music and expressing culture. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I pursue primarily professorial activities in addition to periods of administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies, since 1999, and now as Chair of the Department of Music again).
